Our Head of Talent, Anthony Ramos speaks with queer actress Javicia Leslie about becoming Batwoman in the second season of The CW series, returning January 17 at 8pm. In the upcoming season, Ryan Wilder is described as “a smart and sassy lesbian with a troubled past” who finds the Batwoman costume and then becomes the iconic Gotham crime fighter. As friends and family hold on to hope that Kate may still be found, a homeless 25-year-old named Ryan Wilder stumbles upon Kate’s Batsuit. Focused on no longer being a victim, Ryan takes the suit to use as armor and goes rogue in the streets of Gotham, taking out various members of a new gang called the False Face Society.
Meanwhile, both Jacob Kane and Luke Fox launch searches for Kate, Mary Hamilton grapples with losing yet another family member, Sophie Moore struggles with things left unsaid to her first love, and Alice is furious that someone got to Kate before she could exact her revenge.
At the same time, “Bruce Wayne” (played by guest star Warren Christie) returns under the pretense of searching for Kate, but the truth is he wants his suit back and it becomes the clash of impostors as “Batwoman” and “Bruce” square off in the action-packed season premiere.
Additionally, Batwoman.tv was able to watch the first two episodes of the second season and posted their non-spoiler review of what to look forward to. You can check it out at their website, or in the box below.
Happy New Year everyone! We’re less than two weeks away from Batwoman’s new season, and we have been given the opportunity to view the first two episodes to form an initial review. There won’t be any spoilers, so let’s dive in.
What happened to Kate Kane? It’s the biggest question on everyone’s minds, and of course, the aptly named episode title to kick the season off. We’re also introduced to Ryan Wilder, and get to find out quite a bit about her in the first two eps and how she got to where she is, including how she got hold of the Batsuit.
The new episodes spend some time establishing both Ryan’s place in Gotham, while also giving us time to see what everyone is up to from the previous season. It serves as a good refresher considering the time that has passed due to COVID delay, and establishes who our main players are going to be.
At the same time, the new excitement is somewhat marred by some missteps in terms of pacing. Some things seem to be happening way too fast in terms of how the plot is advancing, and some way too slow, particularly with characterization.
Despite that, the cast is top-notch. The returning actors bring plenty of nuance to their characters, and Javicia Leslie is certainly playing Batwoman as her own person, and she plays it wonderfully, and I’m excited to see how else she’ll shape the new iteration of the hero.
Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without the villains. We’ll get to see plenty of Alice, and how she’s taking Kate’s disappearance. This will definitely change her plans for revenge. She also won’t be the only villain taking the center stage, as we’ve got the threat from Safiyah that was hinted at last season.
One thing is clear: this season’s theme is hope, in all forms and types. It definitely sets the stage for what will surely be a great new season.
